Bringing Payload Processing to Where It's Needed

Agile Space Industries' Mobile Payload Processing Center offers a flexible approach to spacecraft processing and fueling for defense, commercial, and spaceport applications.

The space industry is moving faster. Accelerated timelines, rapid development, and tactically responsive, deployable space systems are increasingly shaping how companies and government organizations approach missions.

But moving quickly requires more than rapidly developing spacecraft and launch vehicles. The infrastructure needed to process, fuel, and prepare payloads can also become a critical part of the mission timeline. Building permanent infrastructure requires time and capital, while existing facilities may not always offer the capacity, location, or capabilities a mission requires.

What if those capabilities could come to the customer instead?

Agile Space Industries developed its Mobile Payload Processing Center (MPPC) to help address that challenge. Designed to be transported and deployed where needed, MPPC can support operations in austere or remote environments as well as provide additional processing capacity at established launch sites. MPPC provides a controlled environment for payload processing and fueling with a design underpinned by Agile's experience in chemical propulsion and hazardous materials handling. Potential applications range from national security missions requiring responsive capabilities to commercial operators that need additional capacity for payload fueling and integration.

Purpose-built to conform to standard shipping-container transport dimensions, MPPC can leverage established transportation and logistics networks for movement between locations, then expand at its destination to provide approximately 500 sq. ft. of controlled workspace designed to meet ISO 7 cleanroom requirements.

A Different Approach to Payload Processing
Traditional payload processing facilities serve an essential role in launch operations, but capacity, location, or fueling capabilities may not always align with a particular mission. Emerging spaceports may need temporary or flexible processing capabilities before permanent infrastructure is complete, while commercial and defense operators may need to support missions at new or changing locations.

MPPC offers another option.

Unlike conventional containerized clean rooms, MPPC is designed to expand after deployment, creating a comfortable 12 ft of vertical working height in the expanded workspace for personnel and equipment. This allows customers to bring processing and fueling capabilities closer to where they are needed rather than relying exclusively on permanent infrastructure.

For spaceports, that could mean additional or interim capacity as operations grow. For commercial and defense missions, it could provide another option when location, infrastructure, or mission timelines create processing challenges.

From Tactically Responsive Space to Broader Applications
MPPC was originally developed to address a specific challenge: how to support tactically responsive space missions when permanent payload-processing infrastructure may not be available where and when it is needed.

The concept was selected through the 2023 SpaceWERX Tactically Responsive Space Challenge, an initiative focused on technologies that could help the U.S. Space Force respond rapidly to emerging operational needs. Agile subsequently developed the prototype MPPC through a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract with the Air Force Research Laboratory, followed by additional government funding to advance the capability to early operational maturity.

The original mission helped shape MPPC's mobile approach. Rather than requiring a spacecraft or payload to be brought to an established processing facility, MPPC was designed to bring specialized processing infrastructure closer to where a mission is taking place.

Since then, Agile has continued to develop and demonstrate the capability while exploring how the same approach could address a broader range of spaceport, launch provider, and commercial mission requirements.

Today, MPPC is in use at Agile's Durango, Colorado, headquarters, with a second customer booked to use the payload cleanroom.

Built on Agile's Propulsion Expertise
Agile has experience handling chemical propellants dating back to 2009. That knowledge is particularly valuable for customers whose missions require specialized fueling operations, including the handling of hypergolic propellants.

"As more spaceports and launch providers develop new capabilities, they're facing infrastructure challenges that don't always have straightforward solutions. MPPC gives us another way to help address those needs, combining a flexible facility with Agile's experience in propulsion and hazardous propellant handling. We're interested in understanding the challenges customers are facing and exploring how we can help them move forward." – Kara Grubis, VP of Strategic Defense Products, Agile Space Industries.

Through a services-based approach, Agile intends to provide more than access to the facility itself. Depending on customer requirements, services could include facility deployment, setup, and operation, along with specialized personnel to support payload processing and fueling activities.

This approach allows customers to draw on Agile's operational experience rather than developing every specialized capability themselves.

Expanding the Applications for Mobile Processing
As new spaceports emerge, operators must balance near-term customer requirements with long-term infrastructure investments. Some may need temporary processing capabilities while permanent facilities are under construction. Others may be exploring mobile launch operations or seeking additional capacity to support specific missions. And because each customer's requirements are different, Agile is interested in exploring applications that may extend beyond traditional payload processing.

Let's Solve Your Next Processing Challenge
The future of aerospace infrastructure will require more than permanent facilities. It will also require flexible services that can adapt to new launch locations, evolving mission requirements, and changing customer needs.

Originally developed to support tactically responsive space missions, MPPC is now opening opportunities to apply mobile payload processing to a broader range of defense, commercial, and spaceport needs.

Whether you're developing a new spaceport, planning a tactically responsive mission, or facing a payload processing or fueling challenge, Agile wants to hear from you.
